The extensive quarries in Vallis Vale were served by a private siding which left the Radstock Branch near Murtry Bridge on the Mells River. A line went as far as Whatley Quarry but was heavily restricted.
In the 1970s a new line was built from Hapsford Junction, half a mile further along the Radstock Branch, to accommodate the long, heavy trains needed to carry the output from Whatley.

On the turn of the century surveys, a couple of old quarries are marked at Whatley Bottom and Foxholes. Today, Whatley is one of the Mendip giants.
